What Is a Stocks & Shares ISA?
A Stocks & Shares ISA is a tax-efficient savings scheme that allows you to invest up to £15,240 in the 2016/17. Using up your allowance each year can significantly boost your investments and save you tax when compared with other saving and investment products.
ISA rules dramatically changed in 2014, increasing your annual allowance and providing extra flexibility for investors. You can now use your full ISA allowance in a Cash ISA, Stocks & Shares ISA, or a combination of the two. You can also transfer from a Cash ISA to a Stocks & Shares ISA, and vice-versa. One thing remained the same, you can only open one Cash ISA and one Stocks & Shares ISA in each tax year.
The ISA allowance is due to rise in April 2017 as well as the introduction of the new Lifetime ISA for which the government provides a 25% top up. We continue to move in line with the changes and endeavour to make saving as easy as possible for our clients.
Why Invest in a Stocks & Shares ISA?
Out of the two ISA options, Cash ISAs and Stocks & Shares ISAs, Britons tend to choose cash. Over the short-term, this can be a sensible choice, but it’s important to understand the interest rates and typical performance of the ISA types before making a commitment.
Cash ISA rates are typically low – often lower than the rate of inflation. In 2014/15 the average interest on a Cash ISA was just 1.53%. That means your money, if saved in a low-rate Cash ISA, could potentially lose value over time. The Government has set an inflation target of 2%, so you’ll need to find a Cash ISA with a rate higher than this to make even a small a return on your money. In addition, many banks offer short-term introductory rates that plummet after 12 months.
If you’re investing for a long-term goal, one that’s five or more years away, a Stocks & Shares ISA has the potential for much greater returns than a Cash ISA. In 2014/15, the average return on a Stocks and Shares ISA was 7.4%. That means you might reach your goal quicker than you think – far better to get there early than not at all.
Of course, with a Stocks & Shares ISA there is an element of risk. The value of your money can go up as well as down and is not guaranteed. So it’s important that you choose a level of risk that you’re comfortable with, as well as one that will help you reach your goal.
Your capital is at risk. Investments can fluctuate in value and you may not get back the amount you invest. Past performance is not a guide to future performance. Tax rules can change at any time.
